How to choose a domain name for my website

Choosing a domain name is a pretty important step in building out your new website. It’s very important to think this through since this will effect many aspects of your digital marketing efforts moving forward.

The domain name itself can be a strong ranking factor for Google since it can easily signal what your business is about and what your primary focus is. While many people like to use proper names for their business or a name they are attached to for various reasons, there is a big benefit to listing in the domain name what the business is about and also it’s location. This is especially important for local type businesses. Two examples that take very different approaches for a local dentist would be:

1. www.jonesandsmiths.com
2. www.ashevillefamilydental.com

In this example, 2 partners, doctors Jones and Smith own a local dental clinic. The first domain example does not give any indication as to what their business is about. In the second example choosing www.ashevillefamilydental.com as their domain name, it immediately tells Google what their business is about. This is a huge boost for a new businesses, and the second example will start ranking for dental related search terms for potential clients looking for a new dentist.
